What to Check on a Test Drive: A Practical Checklist

Buying GuideSeptember 15, 2026 4 min read

Fifteen minutes behind the wheel tells you most of what you need to know — if you know what to look for.

Before you move

Adjust the seat and mirrors, check that every warning light clears after start-up, and test the air conditioning and heat.

In town

Listen for brake noise at low speed, feel for steering pull, and check that the transmission shifts smoothly without hesitation.

On the highway

Take the car to highway speed. Watch for vibration through the wheel at 60 to 70 mph, wind noise around the doors, and how the car tracks when you briefly relax your grip.

After you park

Look underneath for fresh drips, check the engine bay for leaks, and open the trunk to confirm the spare and tools are present.

Ask questions

Ask for the history report, the inspection results, and what warranty applies. A seller who answers clearly is worth working with.
